Sovann
is a quiet, reserved young boy. Sovann's eyes looked different than those of his siblings. They were cloudy and unable to focus. It became apparent as he grew that he was unable to see. His parents believed that bad karma had visited the family and in the village, Sovann was known as an 'unlucky' boy.
More tragedy was in store for his family. His father became ill and died, leaving his mother to care and support six children. The
family struggles with poverty and the needs of a child with disabilities.
Our Safe Haven team brought Sovann to see an ophthalmologist at Ankor Hospital For Children. After a full examination, we discovered that Sovann had congenital cataracts and the prognosis for him is excellent! Sovann had surgery to remove the cataracts and his ophthalmologist feels confident Sovann will regain full eyesight in both eyes. The little boy who has been blind since birth suddenly is able to see the world in a whole new way. Safe Haven Outreach provided the resources for Sovann to have his surgery and provided post operational care at his home in the village. Our medical staff will ensure he has regular follow up exams for his eyes and has the proper glasses needed to strengthen his vision. He recently started school for the 1st time.
